In this episode, we learn positive mitzvah #17, which is to stand before elders and Torah scholars, or talmideh chachamim.
- Elderly are defined as a 70-year-old.
- A Torah Scholar (talmid chacham) is one who is knowledgeable in Torah.
- One should stand when the elder or talmid chacham walks within 6 feet of the person, and he or she can sit back down once they pass by.
- For a "Rav Muvhak", or someone's main Rabbi from whom one learned majority of their Torah, one should stand as the Rav Muvhak enters one's eyesight
- There are two opinions as to how many times one would be required to stand per day:
- One opinion says, maximum twice per day
- The other opinion is that there is no maximum
- The elder or Torah scholar is allowed to forgo on this honor and permit people not to stand for them
